A question I often get asked is "How do I lose the fat right here"? and the truth is that you can not spot reduce fat! The only way to lose fat is to be in a calorie deficit (eating less that your body is burning). People often think that certain exercises will reduce body fat in a specific area when that is not true at all!
Since the body can not just take fat from one area, as soon as the body enters the calorie deficit it will begin to pull fat from everywhere! Face, hands, feet, stomach, back, legs ect... So the fact is that if your goal is to just lose the 5 lbs of love handles around your hips and stomach- you will most likely need to lose around 15 lbs of true scale weight just to get rid of that 5 lbs of fat on your midsection. This is due to the fact that the body will pull fat everywhere from the body and not just the areas that you want it gone. Next time that you think that all of the sit ups that you are doing should have a better effect on losing the fat on your stomach think again. It comes down to diet and how well you can master being in a caloric deficit.
